Under the shade of a secluded jungle near the border of Belize lies the magnificent ancient Mayan city of Kohunlich. Hear the Howler monkeys in the background as you explore, with your knowledgeable guide, this sprawling city built over 1500 years ago. Kohunlich is a lesser known Mayan ruin, being made famous and unique by its Temple of Masks. One of a kind eight-foot-high humanlike stucco masks that line the steps of the Pyramid of the Sun and remain in remarkable condition. Something else that archeologists find fascinating about this site is the complex hydraulic engineering. Nearly half of the area was cut to channel rain water to a giant reservoir! Despite the high temples, palaces, administrative offices, residential buildings, lush gardens and ball courts, that have been excavated and nicely kept, there are many mounds beneath green jungle, holding more secrets from the past. Before leaving, another structure of interest is the 27 steps leading up to a platform thought to hold the residences of the elite. From atop this platform you will have incredible views of the site and the surrounding jungle. The journey from the port to the site is 2 hours in an air-conditioned bus, with two hours to explore Kohunlich, and two hours travel time back to port. Six and a half hours in its entirety.
